Tip for Movers – How Much Do You Have to Give?

The day of your move is just around the corner, and everything has already been planned out. You have packed up your whole life neatly and carefully into suitcases and boxes. Your furniture pieces have been wrapped up properly, and you have hired the services of an expert moving company. But, there is one aspect that many of you might find awkward – and that is the amount of tip to give your movers.

The one and only rule as far as tipping movers is concerned is that there is definitely no pressure when it comes to doing it. However, you have to remember that there is a reason why you hired them in the first place. Moving requires lots of heavy lifting which you would choose not to do on your own. Giving them a tip is just a simple way of expressing your gratitude for the good job made.

Even though it is not a requirement to give a tip, there are times when you might feel the urge of showing a bit of appreciation. Below is a quick overview as to when you have to tip movers and how much you can give.

Tipping Movers – When and When Not to Do It

Not every moving company is made equally. When your moving experience is less than good, you must never feel obligated to give additional cash. However, when your movers went above and beyond your expectations, it is a good gesture to give them reward for their hard work.

  1. It is appropriate to tip your movers when:
  2. They completed the move in a timeline shorter than  expected
  3. They arrived on time
  4. They assisted in packing your things
  5. They navigated through lots of stairs
  6. No damages were incurred during the move
  7. They showcased exceptional professionalism and customer service
  8. If the movers arrived late, caused damages on your items, and acted unprofessionally, it is best to keep your cash in your pocket.

How Much Should You Tip?

Again, there is no hard and fast guideline when it comes to tipping your movers. But, if you will give a tip, the general rule is to give every member of the team an equal amount. If you would rather deal with just one person, you can give the entire tip to the head mover for them to split the amount evenly among the rest of the members.

Some Other Ways for Giving Tip to Movers

If you find it uncomfortable to hand out cash, there is nothing wrong with it. There are still other ways to tip movers during your moving day. Since your movers will surely get tired and sweaty during the process, giving them cold refreshments is already a nice gesture. For moves that start early in the morning, coffee or bananas can also be offered to give your movers the fuel they need for the moving day. When the move runs over their dinner or lunch break, you can also offer a simple meal such as sandwiches or pizza.
