The second coat is where the mudder starts to bring the original coat and the naked drywall together. The first coat leaves quite a drastic change and the second coat begins to make things more uniform.

The third coat is designed to smooth out any final inconsistencies along the wall. At the end of the third coat the wall should look virtually smooth and will only require light sanding to have it ready for priming.

Drywall Taping

Drywall tape is used along with the mud to help create a uniform surface. The tape will be applied to the cracks between sheets and the corners of the room. The tape removes the gap and the mud sticks it in places and creates a drywall resemblant finish.

Without drywall taping on the corners of the room, whether it is on an inside or an outside angle, you would see gaps and lines of uncovered drywall along the edges. Corner beat allows the walls to have more strength and a better-finished look once the whole process is complete.
